Diabetes Self Management
Our Mission:
The Mission of the Diabetes Care Center is to provide excellent diabetes education and services for patients with diabetes, their families and healthcare providers in South Central Indiana.
Diabetes Self-Management Education:
Dunn Memorial Hospital offers diabetes education services for individuals (adults/children) with diabetes and their families. The program offers individual classes to help participants learn how to control and manage diabetes. Staff includes a registered nurse, and a registered dietitian. Out team is also certified insulin pump trainers, which allows more freedom for children and adults alike.
Through scientific research, it was determined it was the amount of carbohydrate,
not the type, that raised blood sugars. The patient with diabetes can eat the
same thing as other family members do! The key to controlling blood sugars
is controlling carbohydrate portions. We can help develop an individual
program that best fits your lifestyle.
The Benefits of our Self-Management Training Program:
- Participants will receive components of healthy meal planning and effects of food on blood sugar.
- Medication management and what to do on "sick days".
- Physical activity.
- Patients will be educated with information on fats, sodium, and fiber.
- Information on lipids, cholesterol, and triglycerides.
- How to reduce long-term complications of diabetes through self-management.
- Foot/Skin Care.
- Stress Management.
- Goal Setting.
Support and Options:
At the Dunn Memorial Diabetes Center you will not only be given the support you need to successfully manage your diabetes, you will be introduced to options on how to continue a normal lifestyle.
One example is through Insulin Pump Therapy. This allows freedom from daily injections for those who currently must administer insulin through the traditional method of shots. Ask your physician if this would be right for you. Our staff is certified in many of the leading Insulin Pumps on today's market and we will work together to find which one fits your needs.
How to take control of your diabetes:
Ask your health care provider for more information or contact the Dunn Diabetes Care Center at 812-276-1288.
